making news this morning, bust up in boston. >> planes collide just before takeoff shaking passengers. why does this keep happening. explosive new details about osama bin laden's plot to blow up air force one much the latest from the trove of intelligence he left behind. and casey anthony's million dollar offer. who is ready to give her a seven-figure check? good morning. bumped and bruised. a rocky start for hundreds off europe-bound passengers in boston. >> their jet collided with a much smaller plane. no one seriously hurt. those on board agreed it could have been much worse. >> yet, this is the second such

accident in the past few months. here's lisa stark. >> reporter: it was a clear evening still light out when the larger delta boeing 767 smacked into the smaller regional jet. both planes were damaged. the 767's wing tip was sliced. the tail of the regional jet badly mangled. >> i was looking out the window, it's funny before, and a saw a plane off to the side and thought t ese planes are pretty close. i wonder if anybody sees. it's those things you hear about. >> could have been a lot worse than it was. we were just grateful no one was hurt. >> reporter: if apparently happened as they were taxing for takeoff. one turned off to a second perpendicular roadway. the jumbo jet was still on that taxiway coming from behind and thought he would clele the smaller plane. he did not. delta says the jumbo jet was heading to amsterdam reportedly with 204 passengers and a crew of 11. the regional jet bound for

raleigh durham, north carolina, reportedly with 74 passengers and 3 crew. one passenger on that small plane complained of a neck injury after the collision. no one else was hurt. this comes just three months after a similar mishap at new york's jfk airport. the dramatic collision there caught on tape as the wing tip of a giant airbus a380 hit the tail of a regional jet and spun it. there were nearly 1,000 runway incidents last year at the nation's airport where planes got too close to each other or vehicles. luckily actual collisions are not common but they are a major safety concern. lisa stark, abc news, washington. and we'll hear more from passengers who were on board those planes coming up on "good morning america." in washington, the president and congressional negotiators are taking a break from the tense budget talks today. but mr. obama will again take his case to the public with his second news conference of the week. there are the slightest t gns of a compromise that might be in the works. it would allow the president to

raise the debt limit while cutting an equal amount in taxes. abc news will broadcast the news conference live at approximately 11:00 a.m. eastern. they put politics side as congressional staffers met for their annual charity baseball game in d.c. the democrats beat the republicans rather soundly, 8-2. nancy pelosi was on hand for the trophy presentation. and a budget impasse that shut down minnesota's government for two weeks is over. meaning thousands of state workers will return to work. the governor and lawmakers have reached an agreement. governor mark dayton says that means the government will re-open "very soon" but he didn't say when. n nonessential operations have been shut down since the 1st of july. abc news learnedew details about osama bin laden's plans to attack the u.s. and high on his hit list, p psident obama. investigators poring over information found in bin laden's pakistan compound say he was plotting to kill the president by shooting down air force one. bin laden was also working on a

diabolical scheme to mark the upcoming tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. martha raddatz has a special report coming up on "good morning america." the fbi is launching its own investigation into the widening hacking scandal involving rupert murdoch. investigators are looking into whether murdoch's new york-based news corp employees tried to access cell phone messages and records of 9/11 victims and their families. murdoch is defending his company to "the wall street journal," a newspaper that he owns saying his executives made only minor mistakes. insanity defense may be in the works for a new york man charged with killing an 8-year-old boy. a judge ordered the suspect to undergo a mental evaluation. levy aron has told attorneys he hears voices and has had hallucinations. jeff pegues has details. >> reporter: no matter how much they hear about the case. >> i don't know how anybody could do that. >> reporter: there are still so many unanswered questions for this community.

residents line up behind the barricades, some praying, others staring at the home that has become a symbol of the horror a little boy endured. the search for evidence in the home continued but what about the man who lived here? >> he looked quite the normal guy. he was quiet. didn't talk much. >> reporter: but authorities allege he is a killer. they say he's a man who kicked and murdered a little boy then disposed of the body parts. police say it included the 8-year-old's struggle to survive. police commissioner ray kelly says, leibby kletzky tried to fight. >> it's reasonable to say at this time based on the marks on the defendant here that there was some struggle. >> reporter: the suspect appeared inourt for the first time and during the arraignment levy aron stood with his head down as his attorney informed the judge of his client's mental state. >> he's indicated to me he hears voices and there's some hallucinations involved, as well. >> reporter: what he is also

hearing are the jeers and outpouring of emotion from the community feeling the pain. and he was also hearing it from other inmates, as well. inmates yelled obscenities att aron as he was led to and from jail. jeff pegues, abc news, new york. >> police say handwritten confession offering graphic details of what happened. it also gives an indication of his mind-set. he ends it by saying "i understand this may be wrong and i'm sorry for the hurt that i have caused." we'll have more from the boy's family on "gma." hundreds gathered in michigan to say farewell to former first lady betty ford. among those joining the ford family were former president bill clinton and former vice president dick cheney. steven ford described her as bringing love and comfort. >> let's move on now and talk about this morning's weather from around the nation.

there's another warning thi. morning about the u.s. credit rating because of the uncertainty over raising the debt limit. standard & poor's says there's a 50/50 chance it will downgrade the bond rating. moody's issued a similar warning. it will make it more expensive for the government to borrowmon money. > overseas markets are mixed thanks to that warning from the s&p. tokyo's nikkei average lost 38 points today. hong kong's hang seng is down about 80 points. in london, the ftse opened lower. on wall street the dow slipped 54 points yesterday. the nasdaq index fell 34 points.

there's a new legionnaire's disease threat at one of the newest hotels on the las vegas strip. 18,000 guests at the resort and casino may have been exposed through hot water in their showers. six cases have been diagnosed. all have recovered. aria has been open just over a year and a half. the city minting new millionaires isn't in silicon valley but houston thanks to oil and gas. the number increased almost 10% in a year. second was los angeles followed by new york, overall the number of millionaires in the u.s. increased 7%. and the housing slump extends to hollywood. the home of late tv producer aaron spelling was on the market for $150 million. and now we know the selling price, just a mere 85 million. and it's being sold to 22-year-old british socialite ecclestone's daughter as a matter of a fact. it has 57,000 square feet

flooding on parts of i-94 from billings to minneapolis and i-9o from rapid city to wisconsin. wet on i-80 from des moines to cheyenne and on i-5 in the pacific northwest. >> if you're flying, airport delays are possible in atlanta, new orleans, minneapolis and denver. when casey anthony walks out of jail sunday she'll have a $1 million check waiting for her if she's willing to tell her story. radaronline has proof a picture of the actual check made out to casey marie anthony from altaie lohr. he's hoping to score the first on-camera interview. no word on whether she'll take him up on the offer. in dallas an offer for affordable housing triggered a mad dash that left eight injured. thousands raced across a parking lot to apply for section 8 vouchers. some of them have been waiting since the night before. officials processed up to 5,000 applications but only 3,800 vouchers are available. the justice department wants

more time to get rid of the don't ask, don't tell ban on gays in the military. last week a federal appeals court ruled that the policy should end immediately. but now the justice department is asking a court to rethink its decision. congress als rethinking to do after okaying a program that is sending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars down the drain. thanks to npr we know about loads of unused spare change piling up as the nation stares down its debt. abc's jon karl explains. >> reporter: we took a journey to the u.s. mint in philadelphia for a lesson in how the government is losing money by making money. this is the presidential dollar coin. congress ordered the mint to make millions of them to honor every dead president but nobody seems to want them. they cost 32 cents a pop to make. the mint makes nearly 2 million of them every day. do the math. about 600,000 dollars a day to make them.

because almost nobody uses these things, most go directly into storage. we found a bunch of them 100 miles down the road in a vault. here at the federal reserve in baltimore, the coins are packed into plastic bags stacked one on top of each other all the way up and down this aisle several aisles of them, millions and millions of dollars in presidential coins. federal reserve says they are piling up so quickly they are spending $650,000 to build a new vault in dallas to hold them. shipping the coins there will cost another $3 million. senator jack reed was one of the co-sponsors of the bill that directed the mint to make the coins. using these things? do you have any in your pockck? >> i don't, i tell you but i like repeatedly used nickels, dimes, quarter. >> reporter: he says congress should consider pulling the plug on it. meanwhile, they keep coming. already more than a billion made and counting. jonathan karl, abc news,

philadelphia. former congressman patrick kennedy is getting married today as the famous family compound in the late ted kennedy spent his final days but that's causing some family tension. senator kennedy's widow and children plan to transfer ownership of the main house to an institute set up by the late senator but family members who will continue to live on the grounds are said to be concerned about their privacy. roger clemens may be off the hook for good now that his perjury case has ended in a mistrial. a judge in washington said clemens could not receive a fair trial after prosecutors showed the jury inadmissible evidence. clemens is charged with lying to congress about using performance-enhancing drugs. he'll find out in september if the case will be rereied or dismissed. speaking of sports time now for the latest sports highlights. here's espn news. >> cole wright with your update. let's say, things didn't go as planned for the pinstripes. they were taking on the blue
